Apologies for the dumb question: how does one remove the cloth grille on the Aon 2?

I've already popped the top panel and loosened the drawstring but the bottom section is proving tricky.

Don't do that, the speaker is designed for the sock to be tightly in place. It is only to be removed for service or replacement.

What are you playing into the Aons? You said you are not playing them particularly loudly, but IF the signal you are sending them is distorted (Not saying it is, just trying to help you troubleshoot here) kick drum, then they will distort.
The Aon 2s are a wonderful, lovely little speaker, but they don't likely kick drum too hard. Being so small.
I have heard them play rock and blues very believably though, so I think you do have a problem somewhere. Just not sure it is the speakers. Could be, what do I know?

Hi John, sorry to hear you are having an issue. We would normally want to know what electronics, how big a room, and how loud, in order to begin the diagnosis process. If you want to reply back with that info we can make a better guess as to whether the speakers are the culprit and should be evaluated by your dealer.

It would be very unusual for both new speakers to have the same problem.
