The comparison between the 103 and the ERC-3 was made by a professional reviewer, I believe on Secrets of Home Theater and High Fidelity, and the ERC-3 came out on top as the reference component. Comparisons to the Oppo 105 seems to depend on the preference in DACs. The 105 uses the ESS DACs that some find harsh. The ERC-3 uses the AD1955, same as found in the highly regarded Cambridge Audio Azur 851C. Im opting for the less etched sound of the AD1955.
I look forward to posting my findings. I did try an older Denon player briefly that I believe has a Burr-Brown DAC. The bass was a bit more powerful right off the top and that was how I discovered my Oppo was off. I didn't listen long enough to conduct any further, in-depth comparisons. My goal is to get my XSP-1 and CD player out next to my T1s and play with better cords and cables. I think I'll be able to eek out a little better sound with shorter and better quality cables. At least that's my theory...
Cheers,
T Cobe

I do not have an SACD Player. My players will play SACD/CD discs, but not in SACD mode.
I do recommend you acquire the Boston Symphony/Munch SACD.

I might have spoken out of ignorance, GDHAL and Santa Claus may be right.
I have a Oppo 95, I know it and the 105 are made to be more audiophile spec. I have a tube CD player and it is only VERY subtly, maybe marginally better than my 95 and that might just be in my mind. I figured your 103 is probably better than my 95 but I might be wrong.
IF I am wrong, then I hope SC does you a solid this Christmas with a great sounding CD player.
God Bless,
Wayne

I don't believe your statement was uninformed. You have first hand experience with Oppo. I believe your 95 would be on par with the 105 and both would be more capable CD players than the 103, by all accounts. I have not heard either so I would be the one speaking out of ignorance here. When Oppo comes out with the BDP-115, may go that route and compare it to the Emotiva.
In all honesty, I can't imagine building a better sounding system for the money as with the T1s and balanced/differential Emotiva gear. One could make a compelling argument with the T2s and some other integrated amps, but I'd put this set up against anything under $7,500. The T1s are at least 80-90% of the whole and the best $5k investment you can make in building a down to earth, 2-channel audiophile setup. $2,500 in Emotiva gear goes a long way! Even with stock power cables, monoprice XLRs, and some Belden speaker wire, things sound amazing.
This is all just my opinion, of course. Take it with a grain of salt. There are many ways to achieve audio nirvana and no one-way is best for everyone. I'm just sharing my journey in hopes it is useful to others. Happy listening!
Cheers,
T Cobe

Above is what you wrote T. Cobe, and I cannot find it any more.
Thanks for your kind and considerate reply. Your knowledge, and well-spoken manner, your great attitude make you such a pleasure
to have on this forum!!!!!!
I always take what everyone writes with a grain of salt, even what I write, but you less so than most.
Let me say without a doubt, I think your use of balanced cables and equipment is a PLUS for SURE!!!!! I do too and it made a REAL difference in my system! I also believe it makes your system LESS cable (quality) dependent, just my opinion.
OK, my Oppo 95 has the Sabre32 DACs and so does my portable iBasso DX90 so I am used to that sound and have been for many years now. I am happy with it. Is it perfect? Surely not. I am not familiar with the DAC you are referring to in your CD player, it could well be better. I went back and searched what DAC is in my Emo XMC-1 as I thought it might be the same as yours. But my pre-processor has the TI (Burr Brown) DACs in it.
So, I can play six ways from Sunday with my equipment. I have hooked up enough wires to kill a cat.
I have tried to compare playing from my Oppo with its DACs straight through my XMC-1 and using the Oppo only as a transport and listening with the DACs of the XMC-1. Or playing directly with my tubed CD player straight through the pre-pro using it's pretty sweet output, but also tried it as a transport and letting the XMC-1 DACs do the heavy lifting. I can play all of these straight through or with the DIRAC room correction processing when using the DACs in the XMC-1. I have compared it all. NOT rigorously but have compared.
My conclusion is resoundingly this:
I FORGETS TO COMPARE AND LISTEN TO THE MUSIC, ENJOY THE MUSIC!!!!
I am a TERRIBLE golden ear. Not a great critical listener at all.
Just telling the truth here. I can hear small differences but nothing that is night and day, no REAL veils lifted.
Just being honest.
I am watching/listening to a Brahms BR concert right now, and BLESS ME, MERCY!!!!! it is AWESOME!!!!!!
Not my best BR, I would have to think, figure a while, oh yes, it is the XMC-1 DACs with DIRAC I am listening with right now.
I THINK, I BELIEVE that is what I prefer. I think the room correction is doing a good enough job that it has probably pushed me over the top to go with the Burr Brown DACs over the Oppo's. And they alone might just be better, but with the room correction I have to give them the nod.
All you guys with the Triton Ones can probably hear the differences even better than I can, your ears and your systems are probably better. BUT, my goodness, this sure sounds GREAT, WONDERFUL!!!!!! Rich, Round, FULL, MUSICAL to the MAX, articulate, detailed, creamy smooth.....I run out of superlatives, even classical music makes me think of the Fat Bottomed Girls that make the Rockin' World go Round!!!!!!
God Bless,
Wayne

A friend gives me copies of Stereophile Magazine, when she is finished with them. I chuckle inwardly as I read the reviews and other articles about really high end gear. Just yesterday I read about a single pair of audio cables which retail for $42,000.00. I have learned from reading Stereophile that I could easily spend seven figures on audio gear.
As I type this message, my love and I are having morning coffee and listening to one of our Mannheim Steamroller Christmas CDs being played on one of my Sony CD Changers, with signals being transferred via my Monoprice cables to my Onkyo NR 3009 and to my Sony STR DE 885 and Sony STR DE 897 Receivers - then, audio being sent from my receivers via mostly 18 gauge lamp cord to my Triton Ones, Triton Sevens , SuperSat 3Cs, Altec-Lansing Boleros, Advents, and my Paradigm DSP 3400 Sub.
All paid for without mortgaging my home and all working together to provide really nice sound.
Happy listening to all,
Art
