Hi Wayne and Everyone,
Yes - actually quite a bit of news regarding Sheryl. She had a bad 10th-day reaction to the chemo. After the reaction was reported to Duke physicians, she was scheduled for a visit to Duke - which took place last Tuesday, June 12. While at Duke, she had blood work, a new C-Scan and met with her oncologist and her thoracic surgeon. The C-Scan results showed considerable shrinkage of her thymoma, but her chemo reaction precluded any further chemo treatments.
Therefore, the decision has been made to proceed with her surgery. We will return to Duke on June 27 or June 28 in order for her to have surgery June 29. There are several possible procedure variations, depending upon what the surgeon encounters during the procedure. Depending upon the extent of the surgery, she will be in hospital for 2 to 7 days following the surgery. We will remain in Raleigh for several days following her release, depending upon how she is recovering and depending upon the surgeon's advice for post-surgery travel.
There is also a possibility of a round of radiation after surgery, depending upon the surgery results and the surgeon's determination regarding any remaining thymoma tissue or cells.
The surgeon is confident about an overall and eventual very positive result.
I will have my computer with me and I will provide a post-surgery update.
Thanks to all for your prayers and concerns.
Best,
Art
