I have posted several reports in the "Show off Your GE Speakers" section of this forum, regarding my experiments with adding extra 2-channel bass signals via my Triton One LFE inputs. I have continued those experiments and will report the results in this post. I have moved this topic to this section of the forum because it seems to me to be the more logical location.
First, a disclaimer of sorts: I acknowledge that GE does not recommend the approach I am using because I am "defeating" or "bypassing" the crossover circuits built in to the Triton Ones.
Nevertheless, I believe that adding controlled "extra bass" via my approach has merit and is worthy of some consideration, especially for Triton One owners who listen primarily to music and who routinely play their music at less than "room volume".
My previous experiments have always revolved around having a direct connection between a "Line Out" output from my amplifier to the Triton Ones LFE inputs. This approach adds noticeable extra bass, but has always resulted in less-than-satisfactory control over the amount of extra bass being added - a conundrum exacerbated by the great variation of bass present across the range of my recorded music. Where to set the Triton Ones LFE level control only added to the muddle.
A couple of days ago, I remembered that, in my collection of retired electronic gear, I had a Chase Technologies RLC-1 Line Controller. This device was manufactured in the late 1980s or early 1990s and is no longer available, except on sites like EBAY and Amazon. This controller has multiple line-level inputs and two line-level outputs and is totally controlled by an IR Remote. The remote provides several control features, one of which is a volume control.
I have inserted this device between the L/R Record Line-Outs on my Cambridge 2-channel amplifier and the LFE inputs on my Triton Ones. I have set the Triton Ones LFE level controls to the 12:00 mid-position. Now, I can easily change the level of the "extra bass" signal I am sending to the Triton Ones to match the characteristics of the recording to which I am listening. I have found this approach to be very satisfying. I enjoy hearing what I define as sufficient and full bass without adding "boominess" or other undesirable bass effects.
Since I now use my Triton Ones exclusively for 2-channel music, I do not have issues with needing connections also for true LFE inputs from multi-channel AV audio sources. However, that problem can be addressed with readily-available audio switch boxes.
As I mentioned earlier in this post, the Chase Technologies RLC-1 Controller is no longer manufactured, but I believe a web search will turn up both used RLC-1 units and other currently-manufactured line-level controls, both manual and with remotes.
Happy listening to all,
Art
