With the return from Onkyo of my newly-repaired Onkyo NR 3009 Receiver, I gave some thought to another possible system configuration before I reinstalled the Onkyo.

The idea would be to completely separate my music system from my AV "Movie" system. I had already made changes which largely separated the two systems, but I was considering a complete separation.

But, before implementing this final separation, I needed to conduct an experiment. My Cambridge 851A Amplifier has a preamp line-level output, which the Cambridge manual states is ideal for connecting to powered subs. I asked myself, "What would I hear if I connected the Cambridge preamp output to the LFE inputs of my Triton Ones?".

So, I proceeded to do so, using my line-level inline volume control between the Cambridge preamp output and the LFE inputs. The Left preamp output is connected via the volume control to the Triton Ones Left input and the Right preamp output is connected via the volume control to the Triton One Right LFE input.

My previous experience with connecting the Onkyo LFE outputs to the Triton Ones LFE inputs, then using the Analog Direct or Double Bass feature of the Onkyo resulted in a significant boost to the bass, but ultimately an unsatisfactory result for listening to music. So, I was not prepared for what I heard with the Cambridge preamp output connected to the Triton Ones LFE input.

Instead of dramatically boosting the bass response, the effect is noticeable, but very subtle. With this arrangement, I can use the in line volume control to adjust the amount of bass boost to restore lost bass at very low listening levels and to "fine tune" the bass response at various listening levels as I listen to different recordings with different bass levels and types of bass sounds.

I am very pleased with this arrangement and with the total separation of my two sound systems which this connection arrangement affords. Now, my music system consists of my Toshiba music laptop, my Seagate external hard drive, my Cambridge Dac Magic Plus DAC, my Cambridge 851A Amplifier, my Triton Ones and my Triton Sevens. The Ones are connected to the Cambridge 851A as the "A" speakers and the Sevens are connected as the "B" speakers.

My Onkyo NR 3009 is the heart of my AV system, which is configured as a 9.2 Channel system and uses all different speakers plus my two external subs.

My Sony BR/DVD/CD player is connected to both systems - via HDMI to the AV system and via optical cable to the Dac Magic Plus. This arrangement allows me to use the Sony player to play movies through the AV system and CDs, if necessary, through the music system.

As part of this latest configuration, I have relocated my Triton Sevens to the sides and slightly forward of my PLP. The Sevens are a bit less efficient than the Ones, so the effect of moving the Sevens to the sides is to widen the sound stage without drawing attention to the Sevens.

Since my primary interest is in listening to music, I am very content to have my Tritons be used exclusively for music.

Happy listening to all,

Art

Love free tweaks or configuration changes that turn out positive.

I confess that I enjoy experimenting with different setup configurations, but I enjoy listening to music more than I enjoy the audio experiments. I do a good bit of choral singing, sometimes as part of very large choruses when performing major choral or choral/symphonic works (such as Carmina Burana or the Verdi Requiem).

When I am a part of a large choral/symphonic presentation, I often think about what it must be like to be the conductor of a large orchestra and a large chorus -- and what the sound must be like when everything is heard from the position of the conductor's podium with the orchestra spread out in front of the podium and the chorus arrayed behind the orchestra. Even in a hall with marked acoustical properties, the panorama of sound at the podium will be very different than the sound in a center seat midway back in the hall.

So, I decided to attempt to re-create the position of the conductor at my PLP - to the extent possible with my gear and with due consideration given to the nature of the recording to which I listening and how it was mastered.

So far, I am really enjoying the sonic experience - especially with closely-mic'd orchestral recordings. The Triton Ones as fronts and the Triton Sevens as sides in phase with the fronts play well together and provide a widening of the sound stage without resorting to artificial manipulation of the sound itself - still just two channel stereo.

Being able to add just a bit of bass via the preamp input to the Triton Ones' LFE inputs is a pleasant surprise.
