Hello,

I will be making my own speaker stands for the AON 3's. The AONS will be my front main speakers. Tweeter will be ear height, Havent completed any measurements yet, but I think the stands will be around 32"-35" high.

What material should I use wood, metal, or MDF board? I have access to welders, saws, whatever I would need, just dont know if I should make them out of steel plates and steel square tubing, or 4x4 wood posts with ply wood for top and bottom?

I am not sure if the different materials would change the sound of the speakers in any way, so I thought I would ask. If nobody on here thinks the sound would change with either material I will probably go with steel.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks!!

The stands we like for Aons are 30" tall (the UF-30 made by Sanus). Metal needs to be appropriately damped and of significant mass. Wood stands are fine but would probably need to be metal reinforced for stability and mass.

Hi Everyone,

Attached are some pics of the steel stands my father made. Hopefully they load on the forum OK.

Specs:
Bottom plate - 9"x11" - 7mm thick
Top plate - 9"x11" - 3mm thick (doesnt sound like a lot but it is VERY sturdy)
2 front legs - 12mmx12mm twisted solid steel (left over pieces from a deck railing)
Back leg - 30mm dia. steel tube. It is hollow for cable management but has thick sidewalls.
Spikes were aluminum (I think) bolts that were sanded to a point. Bottom plate on the stand was threaded.
Total height was 30" and weight was 21.2 lbs each.

I haven't spent a lot of time with them yet, but here are my thoughts so far.

They look AMAZING. Pics don't do them justice. They match the AONS perfectly. Similar glossy black finish as the top and bottom caps on the AONS.

I can feel a slight vibration in the legs when I have the AONS at higher volumes. I can't hear anything but I can feel a slight vibration in the legs when I put my hand on them. I have no idea if this is affecting the sound quality but the speakers still sound amazing.

I am going to try a couple of more tweaks with the stands and see if I can hear a difference in sound. I am going to get some different rubber feet for the bottom of the AONS to see if that changes the sound. Also going to try and get a 9"x11" thin rubber mat and put it on top of the stand, and the last thing I am going to try is getting a 9"x11" piece of maple wood to put on top of the stand. If I do hear a difference in the sound I may fill the back leg with sand for a final test.

If I get another set made, I would probably go with a thicker top plate, and use the same heavy duty round tubing for all three legs. I would then fill all three tubes with sand and try that.

I have no idea if any of the tweaks I am going to do on the stands is going to make any difference in the sound quality but I feel like I have to try it myself. All the information I have read online about speaker stands is different with widely different opinions. I feel like the only way I will know for sure is if I test it myself and listen with my own ears.

Man, Sloppy, there is NOTHING sloppy about those stands, they look GREAT!!!!!
Can I just ask a small favor? Can I have your Dad????? Can he just adopt me??????
I really like the wrought iron, that would perfectly match my house. Can he just come over and fix a few things over here?????
Is that the wire put up the hollow back leg? Is the speaker cable where you are thinking about putting sand? Looks great that way!!!!! Super Tidy.
But I don't think I would put sand in with the cable, it is known to give a "grainy" almost a gravely sound.
Ha ha, just messing with you!!!!
We will look forward to any further reports, any more tweaks you make, any results, but I can tell you this for sure,
I for one am JEALOUS!!!!!!
That is just VERY WELL DONE!!!!!

Blessings, Wayne
Write me if you want my address to send your Dad over!!!!! I can keep him in BEER!!!!!!
God bless the child that's got his own.
