Hi,

This isn't a practical question, just a brain exercise. I was wondering if you could use a soundbar like the GoldenEar's SuperCinema for use as surround speakers if they were mounted behind the listener's couch.

What would be the limitations/considerations for using a 3 channel soundbar as the surround/back speakers in a 6.1 system?

Actually, very practical and highly recommended. Two 3D Array soundbars, one in front, one in back and a ForceField sub would make an extremely stealthy 6.1 theater. The rear 3D Array would create great L/R/ surround separation, the center back would take advantage of the many 7.1 mixes now on most BluRay movies. It is a very cool implementation.

Really? Even if the couch is right near the back wall? Would the SuperCinema have enough room between the listener and the speaker to do what it needs to do to get that great spaciousness?

Also, with that and price in mind, for a Triton Three based system would you recommend a SuperCinema as a rear/surround speaker, or 2 SuperSat50 as surrounds for a more traditionally placed 5.1 system?

I guess this thought experiment might be turning more practical than I thought.

Yes - it is actually an interesting effect to be very close. The rear soundbar should be mounted quite high, of course, which will add some distance to the listeners.

The traditional 5.1 or 7.1 (actually .2 with a Triton Three system) is always preferred if your room/roommate allows. SuperSat 3's are fine for surrounds/rears if price is a concern.

I am setting up a home theater and have a newbie question:

Using a seven channel amplifier and using the SuperCinema 3D Array in both the front and back of the room, how do you connect the back center speaker for 6.1?

Thanks,

TP

That will vary by receiver brand (and may not be an option at all), but typically one of the Rear channel's (7.1, can be called Surround-Back) speaker terminals should indicate Rear-Center (6.1) as an option, which would then be selected for 6.1 in your setup menu, probably in the speaker configuration menu. On my high-end processor it sets the L-Rear as the 6.1 center channel, for example.

However, I know that some receivers do not support this 6.1 format (maybe many).as 7.1 has become the standard. Make sure 6.1 is supported by your receiver - or make sure to choose one that does if you go with this two 3D Array setup.
