I would buy an external amp as the next upgrade. You will hear a difference for critical listening and for movies with a wide range of dynamics. There are lots of options out there at different price points and watts/channel. So take your time.

I highly recommend separates over a receiver. You will hear a difference now and later when you upgrade speakers, your amp will continue to perform well for you.
