I just purchased a TritonCinema Two system, which I hope to receive in the next week, or so. I have a few questions about the system and wondered if someone could help.

1. My dealer suggested that the system should have 4 SuperSat 50's as surrounds (7.1 system) and that's how he ordered them along with 2 Triton Two Towers and a SuperSat 50C. I notice that the TritonCinema Two system normally has SuperSat 3 surrounds. Is the way I ordered the system overkill, spending more money than necessary?

2. I noticed in the forums that the administrator recommended placement of the surrounds on the walls at the highest point possible. Is this correct? Wouldn't the tweeter then be way off axis to the listener?

3. Should the SuperSat 50C, which will be mounted below an 82" wide 16"9 screen, be tilted up toward the listening position, or mounted straight ahead?

Thanks for your purchase. I'll try to answer your questions, in order below:
  1. The basic 5.1 TritonCinema Two system includes a pair of SuperSat 3's for the surrounds. 7.1 vs. 5.1 is both a personal preference, room size, cost and associated equipment question that only you can answer. Personally, I have a 7.1 set up and with today's BluRay movies offering discreet 7.1, why not? As far as SuperSat 50's vs. SuperSat 3's for Surrounds and Rears, if they fit your budget and space, (again) why not? They will allow you a slightly higher maximum playing ceiling, especially in a larger space.
  2. Surround placement is really a personal preference, high placement provides a more theater-like experience (and is more aesthetically acceptable, if that matters to anyone sharing the environment).
  3. The SuperSat 50C center speaker should be at, or point at, ear level for best results.
Hope this helps - enjoy your new system!

Thanks for your quick and thorough response. The TritonCinema System is a replacement for an existing 7.1 setup. My current surrounds are high up on the walls, so I guess the installer knew what he was doing. If the sound I get is anything like the sound I heard at my dealer's showroom, I'll be a lifelong customer!

I just saw a letter to the editor in an issue of Home Theater magazine where the writer questions the reviews conclusions about the wonderful bass from the Triton Two Towers, but the measured results show a -3dB point of 44 Hz. I haven't seen an explanation of why there's a disparity between the listening and the measurements. My own listening in my dealers showroom leads me to believe that there's something wrong with the measurements. Has anyone seen a response on this topic?

Your conclusion is correct, there is something wrong with their measurements.

Sandy Gross wrote a very detailed response to this particular letter, presumably to be published in an upcoming issue of Home Theater Magazine. If not, I will post it here when he makes it available.

It is a good example of why listening trumps measurements, in the case of the Triton Two the actual in-room performance puts the- 3dB point at somewhere south of 25 Hz. In my listening room with a calibrated microphone it looks like about 24 Hz. This is amazing for a modest size and price floorstanding speaker - better than I have ever measured in my listening room other than some very big and expensive stand-alone subwoofers. This is what you and the reviewers and the owners are hearing and talking about.

Trying to "determine" the bass response by summing the output of the various elements (which is what these errant measurements are doing) simply does not yield a result equal to the actual in-room performance.
