@lamia1

This is my friend Joe's (the one in the video with horn system I started this thread about) reply to your first post. Sorry, I'm just the messenger.

That horn system is not properly set up, to start with. The midrange horn is turned the wrong way, he is using an undersized, conical mid bass horn. I also don't know which drivers he is using, nor the electronics. This horn guy does not know much about horns or how to set them up. The Triton speakers are a good deal, good sound---for the money. I just got a pair of ELROG ( Germany) 845 power tubes. The sound is substantially better then the good 845 tubes from China. There is NO substitute for a PROPER horn system !!!!! Comparing the Triton Reference to a PROPER horn system is like bringing a gokart to an Indy 500 race !!!! As I said, they are a good value, good sound for the money.

No need to apologize, he obviously feels the need to criticize without knowing the designs. He proves my point about the need for constant upgrading regarding the tubes. It's like the folks who keep buying every new tweak - ex: different cables costing thousands of dollars and then claim "significant" or day and night improvements etc. At some point you are either enjoying the sound or are always in search of better and never satisfied. Every speaker has it's strengths and weaknesses-he would have been more believable if he'd responded to my criticism of his room set up or described the difference in sound between his system and your Tritons. For what it's worth, the midbass horn is not turned the wrong way for this design and he doesn't know the size of my horns nor the frequencies that each horn is covering so he would have no way of deciding what size mid-bass conical horn I need! My two DIY horns were designed by others but built by me using hornresp software to confirm proper design which was validated by measurements. The horn system does what it was designed to do- it produces a very live sounding, dynamic and broad/wide soundstage. The mid-bass horn is set up to minimize horizontal reflections. I'm quite sure that your friend knows little about CD horns.

I'm no expert on horn systems, never having owned one, let alone built one, but this statement seems a little extreme to me. Speaker drivers and crossover designs have come a long way, and it's a little hard for me to believe that none of these could beat a horn system. Now, with DSP, amazing things are being done with non-horn drivers.

I'm just the messenger:

Here is my response to the "custom horn" fellow.

The topic ( I think ) was a comparison between the Golden Ear Triton reference speakers and a "custom horn speaker". So lets have a fair comparison. How about a few more pictures of the horn system with a view from the "sweet spot" , both horn speakers in the room. how about the room dimensions ??? The picture shows a MIDRANGE horn (not mid bass horn) turned the wrong way.
Problem 1
The lower edge of the midrange horn appears to be laying or very close to it on the mid bass horn, not good.
Problem 2
The lower left edge of the midrange horn looks like it is about 1 1/2" behind the front of the mid bass horn front, creating a ledge where SERIOUS reflections will occur and not correctable. This will definitely cause midrange problems.
Problem 3
The sound from left side of the midrange horn is skinning down the left side of the mid bass horn, another problem with bad reflections.
Problem 4
Serious floor reflections, created in general, by the position of the midrange horn.

I also did not mention the drivers you selected ( no info ) type crossovers, electronics, source components etc.

So, why would you compare your DIY horn system, with its many flaws to a well engineered product like the Triton Reference speakers ?? Your horn system (as shown) is NOT an example of a PROPER horn system !!!

I understand why the midrange horn is turned vertically, might be to large and hit the glass window of bad reflections from the glass or both. Either way, a non starter for me and not fixable as is.

I am a serious DIY person and not here to be critical of others efforts. I would have helped this diy person and pointed out the pitfalls and design problems his design has---and offer solutions !!

As far as experience goes, I have read all of Dr, Bruce Edgars articles ( and personally visited him ) on horn building and theory from Speaker Builders magazines from the 1980's to 1990's. I had input from Ralph Krebs ( Cessaro acoustics ) of Germany ( Google the company) and see what are the best horn speakers on the planet IMHO. I have had 30+ speaker systems over the years including several electrostatic speaker systems, planar magnetic systems, plasma tweeters, ribbon speakers, Lowther speakers, all types of box speakers, sealed and vented. I have also been to nearly every major audio shows in the U.S.A. since year 2000 and listened to (multiple times) just about every speaker system that entered this country. If you listen to the Youtube video Steve Guttenberg made about my system, perhaps YOU can learn something, My major upgrades are over, I have all I need.

If there is anyone on this forum who wants to hear my system, they would be welcome. I am in the N.Y.C. area.

What dsp is this guy using ?

To be honest the deqx units might even give him another look on his system. I haven't come across another system that utilises DSP, speaker correction and room correction as well as the deqx do.

I have a load of T-Refs in my apartment and the deqx takes away all the boominess cause the speaker is way too big for my room. Very cool kit

@Steveo Hi Steveo. At this stage of the thread I prefer to resign my position as "messenger". I clearly indicated in post #27536 that "If you would like to contact him (Joe) directly with further questions, etc. I'd be happy to PM you his contact credentials.". This is precisely what I'll do, so please look for a forthcoming PM from me.
