Fellow Audio Enthusiasts: Beware Small and Innocuous Changes! Here lies the Tinkerer's Tale:

During the process of implementing yet another system rearrangement, I decided to review some settings within my system. Among the devices I reviewed were the settings for my Blue Ray player. One of the settings options was to implement a "Quick Turn On" option. I thought "why not?", so I turned that setting ON.

My Blue Ray player is connected to the "BD/DVD" Input on my Onkyo AV Receiver via an HDMI cable. Also connected to the Onkyo "BD/DVD" Input is the analog Audio cable from my Peachtree DAC. The Onkyo's sensing circuit gives priority to the HDMI signal, so when I play a disc, the Onkyo recognizes the player. With no HDMI signals present, the Onkyo recognizes the DAC. I have had this setup for several years and it has worked perfectly - allowing me to enjoy music or movies without changing the Onkyo settings.

After completing this latest rearrangement, I fired up the system and, to my disappointed surprise, the Onkyo no longer recognized the DAC. After a couple of hours spent exploring possible setup issues within the Onkyo (to no avail) and because it was getting late, I decided to quit for the night. While showering, the "little light of revelation" popped into my head - "What about that little change I had made to enable the "Quick Turn On" setting in the Blue Ray player?".

Cracking the "Smile of the Knowing", I finished my shower and headed back down to the media room, fired up the Blue Ray player, turned OFF the "Quick Turn On" setting, energized the Onkyo, and happily watched the Onkyo recognize the DAC once again.

Obviously, having the Blue Ray player in the "Quick Turn On" mode provided a trickle of signal to its HDMI Output, which was sensed by the Onkyo, thus preventing the Onkyo from recognizing the lower-priority DAC audio signals.

So, fellow enthusiasts - Beware the "Innocuous Tinker".

Happy Listening (restored),

Art

Art,

I suffered a similar fate recently trying to playback DSD discs with my Oppo. I changed a decoding option and consequently was having issues streaming movies from Netflix. I was getting no audio unless I switched from surround to stereo. It took me a while to figure out what the issue was... I finally reset the audio settings back to factory default and voila, the issue was resolved!

Cheers,

T Cobe
