Hi guys, I'm a proud new owner of an awesome TritonCinema Three system! I'm no audiophile by any means (I'd consider myself an audio 'noob'), and I hardly ever listen to music, but I love playing heart-pounding floor-shaking video games and watching epic movies with explosions that knock the breath out of your lungs

Specifically I have two Triton Three towers (front left, front right), a single SuperSat 50C (center), 4 SuperSat 3's (surround left, surround right, rear surround left, rear surround right), and a ForceField 5 sub to top it off I realize the ForceField 5 is probably overkill considering the powered subs inside the Triton Threes, but I really like to "feel" my movies and video games. I watched Lord of the Rings the Two Towers yesterday, and when the giant Grond battering ram hit the gate of Minas Tirith it actually felt like the back of my seat was being shoved forward with each thud!

Anyway, I just got the speakers on Friday and I have a Denon AVR-E400 7.1 receiver with currently all the settings at their defaults. I tried using Audyssey with the included "microphone" but it ended up producing horrible results. It turned all of my sub, sat, and center channel levels way down to almost -10db, and set the two towers to +1.5db. Odd, considering I'd think the towers would be overpowering the satellites if anything, so why it turned the towers up even higher than the satellites I'll never know. It also resulted in there being very little bass in my movies, but if I manually turned the sub back up from -10db to 0db then it resulted in EVERYTHING rumbling and shaking the house down. Even the fair whiper-like voice of the elven queen in the beginning of the Fellowship of the Ring sounded like the doom hammer of God and I was afraid her voice was going to rumble my theatre down! So I held down the three buttons on the front of my Denon and reset it to factory defaults and the speakers actually sound amazing again, like they should.

Does anyone have any suggestions on configurations with the Denon? It has options like MultiEQ, auto volume, crossover frequencies, large/small settings, and the Audyssey capability like I mentioned earlier, but currently they're all turned off. It defaulted to setting the two towers as Large and everything else as Small, and the sub set to LFE, which I actually believe is correct, so I left all those settings alone too.

The Denon only has a single sub pre-out, so that's connected to my ForceField 5, and the towers have only the front left/right speaker wires going to them. I think this is probably OK though, right? This way the towers can add some nice bass to movie background music coming front left/right audio channels while saving the ForceField for the LFE-specific explosions?

What should I have the physical crossover knob set to on the ForceField 5? I tried playing with it by turning it all the way up and all the way down while playing a racing game (with a lot of continuous rumble from the engines) but I honestly couldn't tell a difference. I think it's all the way to the left now (what is that, 40hz?), because I'm a little afraid of making elven queens sound like gods again. But what *should* it be considering it's set to LFE mode in the receiver?

And also, should I go in and set the crossover frequencies in the Denon? I think they're currently all at the default (80hz?). Maybe that's too high for the towers, and two low for the sats? But if the towers are set to Large, does the crossover still take effect? I haven't touched any of those settings because I don't want to mess anything up.

Hi - thanks for your purchase. Sounds like a great system.

Hats off to the Denon as the defaults are pretty much correct (Large L/R main, Small everything else, sub LFE only) and you have wired your system correctly. The only thing I would check is the crossover frequency for the small channels (should all be at 120Hz if you like to listen loud) and the relative levels of all the channels (run the test tones from the speaker calibration menu and adjust accordingly). Also, make sure you have measured and set the speaker distances from the main listening location in the speaker setup menu. Adjust the level control on the Triton "to taste" but start with it at about the 10 o'clock position.

The crossover control on the sub is bypassed with the RCA input (crossover control is on your receiver) which prevents "operator error" and double crossovers. No surprise about Audyssey, we have heard most of the time that manual setup and a little "tweaking" gives the best results.

Hi and thanks for the response. The Tritons + SuperSats sound great but I'm having a problem with the ForceField 5 sub. It makes sense that the physical crossover frequency knob on the back has no effect if it's being bypassed since I'm using the RCA input. I tried using the Denon's settings to lower the crossover for the sub (I'm not sure if it's a crossover or an LPF in the Denon) but I still have a problem that I'm still getting way too much rumble in the background of movies when it shouldn't be there, even after turning the frequency down in the Denon. For example, I watched Die Hard 2 (Blu Ray, 5.1 audio) last night and at the very beginning of the movie it starts off in a scene where they're standing outside an airport. Now, there's Christmas music playing and they're talking about a traffic ticket and it's 1 minute into the movie so obviously there shouldn't be any suspenseful music going on. But just the sound of the background noise causes the ForceField to constantly rumble in the background, making it hard to hear the dialog. It's even worse in the scene later in the movie when the reporter is talking on the phone in the airplane bathroom. You can tell that the background audio is supposed to resemble the low pitch background noise that you hear (and eventually learn to ignore) in airplanes, but the ForceField makes it sounds like there's a stampede of horses running through my theater that totally drowns out the rest of the experience. In both cases the solution would seem to simply lower the power levels even further on the ForceField, but then the problem is that I don't feel knocked out of my chair when the airplane finally DOES explode!

How can I get the ForceField to knock me out of my chair during an explosion but remain non-distracting during simple background bass? Should I be adjusting the physical power level knob on the back of the ForceField? Or should I be lowering the dB levels in the Denon? Or should I be lowering the crossover (LPF?) frequency in the Denon? Right now I'm just kind of floundering all over the place and not getting a good result. Thanks for any advice!

I can only guess something is setup wrong in the Demon bass management, have you asked your dealer for some local assistance? Sorry, very hard to diagnose via email. You can also call the GoldenEar office for support.

The crossover for the sub will make a difference, if setup properly the sub would be getting LFE only, which should have a crossover setting default of 120Hz so none of the signal is eliminated. Perhaps the subs on the Tritons are set to high?
